Summary

Milan Middle School serves 618 students in grades 5-8 within the Milan Special School District in Milan, TN. This middle-of-the-pack school offers a genuinely mixed picture for parents: it boasts excellent attendance and solid math instruction, but struggles with English language arts and support for special education students, placing it at the 52nd percentile statewide.

Attendance is a clear standout. Milan's chronic absenteeism rate of 5.0% is dramatically better than the state average of 18.3% and is the best among all nearby middle schools, including South Gibson County Middle School (7.1%) and Northeast Middle School (23.2%). Academically, Milan's math performance is a genuine strength in the early grades, with 5th and 6th grade proficiency rates well above state averages. However, this advantage fades by 8th grade. The school's biggest academic challenge is English language arts, where only 31% of students are proficient, compared with the state average of 40.6%. This weakness persists at every grade level and cannot be blamed on absenteeism, as Milan's ELA scores are nearly identical to those at Northeast Middle, despite Northeast's much worse attendance record.

The most concerning data point is the school's performance with special education students, where Milan has ranked in the bottom 27th percentile or lower for three consecutive years. This is especially puzzling given that Milan spends more per student ($13,018) than any comparable school in the region, including South Gibson ($9,834), which achieves far superior results in every subject. Milan's statewide ranking has also steadily declined, from the 84th percentile in 2018-2019 to its current 52nd percentile. For parents, this suggests a school with strong student engagement and solid foundational math skills, but one that needs to urgently address its reading instruction and special education services to reverse its downward trend.
