Jackson, Tennessee is served by 23 schools — including 11 elementary, 5 middle, 6 high, and 1 alternative school — with roughly 11,853 students, and all but one (West Tennessee School for the Deaf) belong to the Jackson-Madison County Schools district, which ranks 134th of 141 Tennessee districts (5th percentile, 0 stars). That districtwide context is important because most Jackson schools perform well below state averages, yet a small handful prove that high achievement is possible in this community.

Madison Academic Magnet High School is the city's clear standout, ranking 29th of 400 Tennessee high schools (93rd percentile, 5 stars) with English II proficiency of 91.3% and chronic absenteeism of just 14.2%. Jackson Central-Merry Early College High School is the second bright spot, ranking 58th (86th percentile, 4 stars) and improving over time. Among elementary and middle schools, Community Montessori School leads the way — the only non-high-school in the district to exceed state proficiency in math, ELA, science, and social studies, while posting the best attendance in the city (6.8% chronic absenteeism). Northeast Middle School's overall rank is modest, but 92% of its 8th-grade Algebra I students scored proficient, matching the state rate and showing a strong accelerated math pathway.

The other side of the picture is sobering.
