Summary

North Side High School is a public high school located in Jackson, Tennessee, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 925 students. The school is part of the Madison County School District, which is ranked 126 out of 139 districts in Tennessee and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

North Side High School consistently ranks in the bottom third of Tennessee high schools, with a ranking between 312-354 out of 347-392 schools over the past several years. The school's performance on state assessments (TNReady) is significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels. Additionally, North Side High School has a high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 18.9% to 42.1% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. When compared to other high schools in the same district, such as South Side High School, Jackson Central Merry High School, and Madison Academic Magnet High School, North Side High School consistently underperforms.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student, which has increased from $10,887 in 2020-2021 to $14,291 in 2023-2024, the academic outcomes at North Side High School remain poor. The school's performance on state assessments has declined over the past several years, with the school's ranking dropping from 154 out of 273 Tennessee high schools in 2016-2017 to 333 out of 389 in 2024-2025. This trend is concerning and suggests that the school may be facing significant challenges in improving student outcomes, particularly for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and Special Education students, who rank in the bottom quarter or third of Tennessee high schools in these categories.

Open Quote While things are getting better, they are getting better very slowly. With this "Vision 2016" it will be interesting to see how the new lines and new students affect Northside. I have had difficulty communicating with teachers - mainly that I get no response when I email or call. Also, my child was taken on a field trip without permission (I wrote NO on the permission slip that was sent home, they put my child on the bus anyway) and got nowhere when I complained.
