Summary

Halls High School is a large public high school in Knoxville, Tennessee, serving 1,236 students in grades 9–12 as part of Knox County Schools. The school has experienced a significant decline in its state ranking over the past decade, falling from a 4-star rating and 89th percentile in 2015–2016 to a 2-star rating and 43rd percentile today, where it now ranks 228th out of 400 Tennessee high schools. This places Halls in the lower-middle tier of the state—a far cry from its former upper-tier status.

Academically, Halls is a school of contrasts. The most recent year brought a standout Biology I proficiency rate of 75.6%, the highest among nearby comprehensive high schools and well above the district (57.3%) and state (49.8%) averages. Yet Algebra I proficiency sits at just 11.8%, far below the district (32.8%) and state (32.3%) averages. Strong math students tend to take advanced courses early and perform well, while students who take those courses later struggle significantly. Chronic absenteeism is another concern, with 26.8% of students missing substantial instructional time—well above the district rate of 19.4% and the state rate of 18.3%. The graduation rate has also slipped to 88.3%, now below both district and state averages for the first time in recent years.

Compared with its neighbors, Halls is competitive with Central High School, but trails Powell High School and Gibbs High School on several key measures, particularly in math and attendance. It performs well above Fulton High School and Austin-East High/Magnet School in nearly every subject. Encouragingly, the school has shown meaningful progress for economically disadvantaged students, and science and history scores improved sharply in the most recent year. However, reducing chronic absenteeism and strengthening foundational math instruction are likely the most important steps for reversing the school's long-term decline.
