Volunteer High School serves about 953 students in grades 9–12 in Church Hill, Tennessee, and is part of Hawkins County Schools. The school's graduation rate is a bright spot—94.2% in 2023–2024, above the state average—but academic proficiency on state tests falls well below both district and state averages in every core subject, with math the most urgent concern.

On 2025–2026 TNReady exams, just 17.1% of Volunteer students scored proficient in Algebra I and 17.0% in Algebra II, roughly half the state average of about 32–37%. Geometry proficiency was 24.3% compared to 42.3% statewide. English II was the relative strength at 48.8% proficient, still about 9 points below the state. Volunteer is the lowest-ranked high school among its nearby peers, earning a 1-star rating and a 29th-percentile state ranking, while Cherokee High School—in the same district with similar enrollment and spending—ranks in the 42nd percentile and outperforms Volunteer in every tested subject. Want your child to succeed and be prepared for college? DO NOT send them to this school or a Hawkins Co school! I can tell you from experience, there are plenty of ways to fall through the cracks and get out with a high GPA and learn absolutely nothing! The school has some good teachers, but those teachers do not have a shot because all of the other teachers are allowing the kids to under-achieve. I believe it all starts with the higher authority of the school systems and what they allow to happen. If you know someone, you are a good athlete, or you just show you do not care. The teachers feel obligated to pass you because they do not want it to look bad on them that they could not teach a kid. I think its better to fail a kid and make them face reality early rather than send them in to the real world and face failure the hard way! Close Quote
