Summary

Middleton High School is a combined middle/high school in Middleton, Tennessee, serving grades 7–12 with about 410 students as part of the Hardeman County Schools district — a district ranking in the bottom 9% of Tennessee districts. The school itself has historically ranked in the bottom fifth of Tennessee high schools, with a 2025–2026 ranking of 323rd out of 400 schools (19th percentile), a modest improvement from 340th out of 392 (13th percentile) in 2023–2024, though it remains firmly in one-star territory.

The most encouraging news for parents is the graduation rate: 92.5% in 2024–2025, which tops both the district (86.6%) and the state (90.5%), and sits well ahead of nearby Central High School in Bolivar (84.4%). The school shows a "humanities strong, STEM weak" profile in the classroom. English II proficiency is 45.9% — nearly 12 points higher than Central's 34.0% — and U.S. History proficiency (34.1%) also beats Central (23.3%) and the district (26.9%). Social Studies across all grades has jumped from 9.1% proficiency in 2022–2023 to 42.4% in 2025–2026, and all-grade Science (41.7%) is close to the state average of 46.9%.

The bigger challenges are in math and early literacy. Algebra I proficiency is just 11.9% (state: 32.3%), Geometry is 20.0%, and English I is 12.7% — all trailing Central and far behind state averages. Chronic absenteeism is also a concern, with 24.0% of students chronically absent in 2024–2025, above the state's 18.3%. Additionally, per-student spending has risen to $15,077 — significantly above Central's $12,838 — without a proportional jump in test scores. While the school has shown real, if uneven, progress in recent years, these math and attendance hurdles will need to be addressed for Middleton to move out of the bottom fifth of Tennessee schools.
