Summary

Hixson Elementary School is a K–5 school in Hixson, Tennessee, serving 419 students as part of Hamilton County Schools. The school has solid attendance and above-average funding, yet its academic performance has fallen sharply in the most recent year, placing it well below both the district and state averages.

Hixson currently ranks 900th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools (12th percentile), a steep drop from just a few years ago when it sat near the statewide median. Proficiency rates on state tests are roughly half the district and state averages: 21.6% in math and ELA, and 26% in science, compared to district averages of 40%, 38.3%, and 46.6% respectively. The decline is dramatic—math proficiency fell 15 points in a single year. Nearby schools tell a very different story. Big Ridge Elementary, just 2.3 miles away, ranks in the 83rd percentile and spends about $3,000 less per student. Thrasher Elementary, the top-performing school in the area, posts 5th grade math proficiency of 92.2% compared to Hixson's 30.4%.

On the positive side, Hixson's chronic absenteeism rate of 10.7% is far better than the district (17.1%) and state (18.3%) averages, meaning students are showing up to class. The school also spends $20,386 per student, more than most nearby schools. However, that funding hasn't translated into results, and spending has increased 43% over three years while scores declined. Subgroup data shows particular challenges for students in special education and low-income students, both ranking in the bottom 11% statewide, while English Language Learner performance collapsed from the 84th to the 17th percentile in two years. For parents, the bottom line is that Hixson is a school with strong attendance and resources that is nevertheless struggling academically—a situation that warrants attention and a close look at instructional effectiveness and student support systems.

Open Quote My child is currently in 2nd grade. She switched from a Blue Ribbon School when we transferred to Hixson Elementary. The first thing I noticed was the lack of communication from the teacher. The next thing I learned is that her teacher lost everything (excused absence forms I was sending, homework folder, reading logs) After several attempts of communication I had to reach out to the principal. That was resolved but it kept happening. I am now zoning my child to a different school as this is by far one of the worst schools I have seen in a long time! Its sad because people blame the lower incomes but the kids are great its the teachers that don't care. Sad to see when its in elementary and this is when the kids will learn how to love school or hate it and these kids will hate school if this is what the example is. Close Quote
