Summary

Mosheim Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Mosheim, Tennessee, serving 711 students as part of Greene County Schools. It is the largest elementary school in its comparison group—nearly twice the size of Doak Elementary School and roughly three times larger than McDonald Elementary School or Whitesburg Elementary School.

The school has shown genuine improvement over the past few years. Since 2022–2023, math proficiency has risen from 36.8% to 48.8%—above the state average of 43.0%—while English Language Arts improved from 28.0% to 38.2% and science from 31.1% to 41.0%. Its overall state ranking climbed from the 33rd to the 48th percentile. However, challenges remain. Science trails the district by nearly 10 points, and the school sees a sharp drop-off between 3rd and 5th grade: third graders score at or near state averages in all subjects, but by 5th grade, ELA proficiency falls to just 29.3%, more than 13 points below the state average. One bright spot stands out: economically disadvantaged students rank in the 81st percentile statewide, a remarkable jump from the 23rd percentile just two years earlier. Special education students, however, rank in the 13th percentile.

Mosheim also stands out for its efficiency and attendance challenges. At $8,870 per student, it spends far less than every comparable school—Doak Elementary School spends $10,987, Highland Elementary School spends $20,564, and Greeneville City Schools spend $14,000–$20,500—yet it achieves math scores competitive with several much higher-spending schools. Chronic absenteeism, though, is a concern at 19.0%, above the state average of 18.3% and well above Doak Elementary School (10.9%) and Baileyton Elementary School (13.4%). Reducing absenteeism and strengthening upper-elementary instruction could help this improving school continue its upward path.
