Summary
Cleveland Middle School is a large public school in Cleveland, Tennessee, serving 1,291 students in grades 6–8 as part of Cleveland City Schools. Its academic standing has slipped considerably in recent years: the school went from a 59th-percentile state ranking and 3-star rating in 2018–19 to the 29th percentile with 1 star by 2025–26, placing it near the bottom of the regional comparison—only Brown Middle School ranks lower in the surrounding area. Meanwhile, several nearby schools are faring much better, including Ocoee Middle School (78th percentile), Hunter Middle School (86th), East Hamilton Middle School (87th), and Loftis Middle School (88th).
Academically, Cleveland Middle trails state averages by 12–16 percentage points in core subjects. In the latest reporting year, proficiency rates were about 27% in math, 25% in English Language Arts, 35% in science, and 38% in social studies, compared with state averages of 43%, 41%, 47%, and 51%, respectively. The 7th-grade ELA proficiency rate is particularly weak at 20.9%. One notable exception is Algebra I, where 81.5% of Cleveland students scored proficient versus 32.3% statewide—but this success appears concentrated among a smaller group of advanced students, given that only 22.2% of 8th graders in regular grade-level math are proficient.
Chronic absenteeism is a serious concern, affecting 26.5% of students compared with 18.3% statewide; among nearby schools, only Brown Middle has a higher rate. In contrast, Hunter Middle sits at just 9.7%. Cleveland also struggles with its highest-need students, with proficiency rankings in the 5th–23rd percentile for special education, English learners, Hispanic students, and low-income students. Per-student spending at Cleveland ($12,680) is below most Hamilton County Schools but above Ocoee Middle ($11,269), which achieves far stronger results, suggesting funding alone doesn't explain the school's challenges.
