Summary

East Hamilton Middle School in Apison, TN, serves 913 students in grades 6–8 and is part of Hamilton County Schools — and it stands out as one of the strongest middle schools in the area. In recent testing, the school beat both the district and state averages in every core subject. For example, 50.6% of students scored proficient in math and 63.1% in science, compared to statewide averages of 43% and 46.9%. The school also ranks in the top 15% of Tennessee middle schools overall, a position it has held for several straight years.

Parents comparing nearby options will find a clear picture. Hunter Middle School is the only local school that comes close, with similar state rankings and slightly stronger science and social studies scores. Meanwhile, Ooltewah Middle School, just 4.4 miles away, lags far behind in math and ELA proficiency despite being geographically close. One of East Hamilton’s biggest academic highlights is its Algebra I program, where 91–94% of students are proficient — a staggering figure compared to district and state rates near 30%. Chronic absenteeism has also dropped from 26.1% a few years ago to 16%, which is now better than both the district and state averages.

What makes East Hamilton particularly impressive is that it achieves these results while serving a large and diverse student body. Subgroup rankings show strong progress for students from low-income backgrounds and those receiving special education services, both of which have risen significantly in recent years. The school also spends less per student than many lower-performing schools in the district, including nearby options like East Lake Academy and Orchard Knob Middle. While there’s still room for improvement in areas like 8th grade math and certain subgroup gaps, East Hamilton consistently delivers high-level academics, strong advanced-math pathways, and improving attendance — making it a top choice for families in the Chattanooga region.

Open Quote Students everyday use the N - word. White STUDENTS use the N - word to call african american students. The teachers can staff hear this everyday yet nothing is done. The obsessive amount of cussing needs to stop. Some teachers really need to CARE about the students instead of calling them failures. NO ONE is a failure no matter how bad your grades are. This is unacceptable. I have heard recently about a fight that STUDENTS had to break up because of a white boy calling a african american the N - word. This school needs to step it up before it ends in a lawsuit! Close Quote
