Summary

Michigan Avenue Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Cleveland, TN, serving 452 students as part of Bradley County Schools. It is a clear standout in the region: the school has earned a 5-star statewide rating every year since 2021–22 and currently ranks #92 out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools, placing it in the 91st percentile. Proficiency rates in math (67.3%), ELA (68.2%), and science (70.2%) run roughly 22–28 percentage points above both the district average and the Tennessee state average. This is not a one-year spike — Michigan Avenue has ranked in the 87th–96th percentile every year since 2014–15.

Michigan Avenue also outperforms every nearby elementary school. Its math proficiency is 8 points higher than North Lee Elementary School, 16 points higher than Park View Elementary School, and more than 30 points higher than Taylor Elementary School. The gap versus Cleveland City Schools is even wider: Michigan Avenue's ELA rate of 68.2% is roughly two and a half times the rate at Arnold Memorial Elementary School, G.R. Stuart Elementary School, and Blythe-Bower Elementary School. One clear advantage is attendance: only 10.8% of Michigan Avenue students are chronically absent — roughly half the state rate and far better than nearby schools like Arnold Memorial (26.0%) and Blythe-Bower (23.8%).

Michigan Avenue achieves these results while spending less than its neighbors — about $11,288 per student, compared to $15,000 or more at several lower-performing nearby schools. Strong results extend across student subgroups, with economically disadvantaged students ranking in the 89th percentile statewide in 2025–26. The main areas to watch are special education (a standout 91st percentile in 2022–23 but mid-range since) and Hispanic students (51st percentile in the only year of available data). Overall, Michigan Avenue is a consistently high-performing, efficient school that stands well above the pack in the Cleveland area.

Open Quote The Principal, teachers, and office staff go above and beyond. My children love it at this school. And they give homework and help the children with the homework. I love being able to measure my children’s education by multiple measures not just test. Also, everyone is so involved and makes learning fun. This school really does care and it shows in everything they do from teaching to after school activities. Thank you Close Quote
