Summary

Medical District High School is a small public high school in Memphis, Tennessee, serving 146 students in grades 9–12 and operating as part of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district. Despite the district ranking in the bottom 3% of Tennessee districts, Medical District High School consistently ranks in the top half of the state — it currently sits at the 60th percentile statewide. Among nearby Memphis schools, only Crosstown High School (62nd percentile) and Middle College High School (53rd percentile) post comparable rankings; most other neighborhood high schools, including Central High School and Manassas High School, rank significantly lower.

Where the school truly shines is in specific subjects. In English II, 86.2% of students scored proficient — nearly double the state average and far ahead of every nearby school, including Crosstown High School (65.9%) and Middle College High School (69.6%). The school also posts the highest Algebra II (50%) and Geometry (50%) proficiency rates among its peers. Perhaps most impressive, the school ranks in the 97th percentile statewide for how well it serves low-income students, and in the 76th percentile for African American students. Chronic absenteeism is remarkably low at just 8.3%, compared with the district's 29.5%, and a student-teacher ratio of about 10-to-1 suggests students get plenty of personal attention.

That said, the school has slipped from its elite standing a few years ago. In 2023-2024, Medical District High School was a top-10% school statewide (5 stars); by 2025-2026, it had fallen to the 60th percentile. The main concern is English I: proficiency dropped from over 50% in prior years to just 13% in 2025-2026, well below the district average. Since English II scores remain exceptionally strong, this appears to be a 9th-grade-specific issue rather than a schoolwide decline. If the school can stabilize English I while maintaining its strong math and English II results, it has a clear path back toward elite status.
