Summary

Kingsbury Middle School serves 538 students in grades 6–8 in Memphis, TN, and is part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The school ranks in the 5th percentile statewide (566th of 594 Tennessee middle schools) with a 0-star rating, and its proficiency rates are dramatically below district and state averages: only 9.5% of students are proficient in math, 9.4% in English language arts, 16.9% in science, and 17.6% in social studies, compared with state averages of 43%, 40.6%, 46.9%, and 51.4% respectively.

One genuine bright spot is attendance: only 10.9% of Kingsbury students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, far better than the district rate of 30.2% and even the state rate of 18.3%. That makes Kingsbury one of the most consistent attendees in the area, unlike nearby schools such as Treadwell Middle School (37.5%), Sherwood Middle School (45.3%), Grandview Heights Middle School (63.3%), and Lester Prep (48.1%). The problem is not students missing class; it is that students who do show up are not reaching proficiency. Nearby schools show what is possible: White Station Middle School posts 42.4% math proficiency and Maxine Smith STEAM Academy posts 60.7%, while Craigmont Middle School and Memphis Business Academy Middle School sit somewhere in between.

There are a few other noteworthy findings. Social studies proficiency has improved sharply from 6.5% to 17.6% over two years, showing some capacity for change, while math has actually declined over the same period. Students also appear to fall further behind as they progress: 6th grade math proficiency is 13.4%, but drops to 7.9% by 8th grade. Special education students rank in the 32nd percentile — a relative strength compared to the school's overall 5th-percentile ranking — and the school spends less per student ($12,315) than most nearby schools, including Elmore Park Middle School, which achieves much stronger results on similar funding. Kingsbury has dependable attendance and a couple of areas to build on, but needs significant academic intervention.
