Summary

White Station Middle School is a large public school in Memphis, TN, serving 1,127 students in grades 6–8 as part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The school stands out dramatically from its district context: while Memphis-Shelby County Schools ranks in the bottom 3% of Tennessee districts, White Station ranks 137th out of 594 Tennessee middle schools—the 77th percentile—earning 4 stars. Historically, the school has been even stronger, ranking as high as 13th in the state in 2016-17, though its percentile has drifted downward gradually over time.

In 2025-26, White Station’s proficiency rates roughly doubled the district average and matched or exceeded state averages in math, English, science, and social studies. This makes the school an academic outlier compared with nearby Memphis-Shelby County schools like Colonial Middle School (27th percentile), Craigmont Middle School (18th percentile), and Ridgeway Middle School (10th percentile). In fact, White Station ranks 300–450 places higher than every nearby district school. Only Elmore Park Middle School in Bartlett City Schools is comparable, with White Station posting stronger English scores and comparable science results. Chronic absenteeism at White Station is also low at 12.4%, versus a 30.2% district rate and rates above 37% at nearby schools like Treadwell Middle School and Lester Prep.

White Station earns especially strong ratings for several student groups, including top-tier rankings for Asian students and strong results for White, African American, and Hispanic students. However, the school’s effectiveness for low-income students dropped sharply from the 88th percentile in 2024-25 to the 50th percentile in 2025-26, and special education students rank below the school’s overall percentile. Additionally, 8th grade proficiency trails 6th and 7th grades in every subject, suggesting a need for additional support in the final middle school year. Despite its gradual slide from elite status, White Station remains a standout choice in the Memphis area, achieving strong outcomes without the highest spending in its local region.

Open Quote My family has had an outstanding experience at White Station Middle School (WSMS). I had one child graduate in 2023 and another that will graduate 8th grade this year. Both are in the optional program and transitioned easily from elementary school. The school does a great job of welcoming new students and getting them acclimated. There is a great orientation in the summer as well as a popcorn social for new students to get to know one another.

The academics are top notch with a wide variety of classes ranging from traditional to honors to the opportunity to take high school courses onsite at WSMS in 7th and/or 8th grade if they qualify. The teaching staff is excellent with many having taught at WSMS for many years.

There are many extracurricular activities to choose from such as extensive sports offerings and approximately 40 clubs. The academic clubs are very accomplished, winning competitions at the state and national levels. Many of the athletic teams are city champions and compete well in state competitions. There are many musical offerings including three orchestras, a number of choirs, an acapella group, and the school band. Last year, WSMS students made up 25 of the All-West Orchestra. The musical offerings are excellent and enriching for the entire student body, even for those who do not participate and only attend the concerts.

The parents association has been very welcoming to me and I have enjoyed getting involved. Both of my kids made friends quickly and it is a fun and positive social environment.

Many students matriculate to White Station High School, which has the most robust academic offerings in the county. WSHS has more AP classes than any school in the area, more National Merit Semifinalists than any school in west Tennessee, more than 50 clubs, as well as robust athletic offerings. Close Quote
