Summary:

Cocke County Schools operates 11 schools in rural eastern Tennessee: 9 elementary schools serving pre-K through 8th grade and 2 high schools serving grades 9–12, with roughly 4,200 students total. The district ranks 61st of 141 Tennessee districts (57th percentile, 3 stars), placing it in the middle of the pack statewide.

Smoky Mountain Elementary is the top-ranked school in the district, coming in 233rd of 1,019 elementary schools (77th percentile, 4 stars) with the highest science proficiency (67.9%) in the district. Grassy Fork Elementary is close behind at 261st, posting the district's best math (58.1%) and social studies (66.0%) scores. Del Rio Elementary, the smallest school at just 85 students, leads the district in ELA (60.0%) but struggles in math (30.0%). Bridgeport Elementary and Centerview Elementary are attendance standouts—Centerview's 7.4% chronic absenteeism is the lowest in the district—and both score at or above district averages. At the high school level, Cocke County High School beats Cosby High School in most subjects, including Algebra I (27.5% vs. 15.8%), English I (35.1% vs. 21.3%), and Geometry (37.2% vs. 32.2%), though Cosby High School posts stronger Biology and English II scores. Northwest Elementary is the clearest concern, ranking 871st of 1,019 (1 star) with proficiency below 26% in every subject and 30.7% chronic absenteeism.

The district's biggest systemic challenges are chronic absenteeism—26.2% districtwide versus 18.3% statewide, with high schools above 34%—and elementary literacy, where the 37.8% average trails the state's 40.6%. Spending per pupil does not clearly predict success: Del Rio Elementary spends the most ($19,823) yet has weak math, while Parrottsville Elementary spends the least ($11,884) and ranks in the 75th percentile. Both high schools graduate at least 95% of students, well above the state rate of 90.5%, but test proficiency in most subjects remains below state averages. Wide grade-level swings—from Bridgeport Elementary's 75% third-grade math to Northwest Elementary's 5.7% seventh-grade ELA—suggest that targeted interventions and scaling the practices of top performers could move the district forward.
