Summary

Woodruff High serves 844 students in grades 9-12 in the Woodruff, SC area, operating within Spartanburg 04 district, which is the only high school in the district.

Woodruff High has experienced a significant decline in academic performance over the past two years, dropping from the 76th percentile statewide to the 44th percentile. This decline is consistent across all student subgroups, with the most dramatic drops seen among African American students (falling from the 85th to 11th percentile) and Hispanic students (falling from the 74th to 6th percentile). The school's graduation rate of 78.8% remains nearly 8 points below the state average of 86.7%, a gap that has persisted for five consecutive years. Chronic absenteeism also remains a concern at 24.9%, exceeding both district and state averages. Test scores show notable volatility across subjects and years, with English 1 proficiency dropping from 87.79% to 57.08% over three years, suggesting potential inconsistency in instruction or assessment preparation.

When compared to nearby schools, Woodruff's challenges become more apparent. Hillcrest High (12.8 miles away) maintains a 94.5% graduation rate and outperforms Woodruff on every EOCEP subject test. Fountain Inn High (10.1 miles away) achieves superior academic outcomes despite having a higher chronic absenteeism rate of 42.5%. Even Dorman High (8.6 miles away), despite being in a lower-ranked district, achieves an 88.6% graduation rate. Notably, Woodruff spends $13,021 per student—more than all comparable nearby schools—yet achieves worse outcomes, suggesting resource utilization rather than allocation is the issue. The school's gifted and talented program remains a bright spot, improving to the 65th percentile, while support for disabled students has declined to the 26th percentile. These patterns indicate systemic challenges that require targeted intervention to reverse.

Open Quote If you are not rich or popular the teachers at this school care nothing about you or your needs. The teachers are VERY rude and disrespectful of children who need more help then others. This school as been sued by former students because of teachers and coaches disrespecting students. I moved my kids as soon as I could! Close Quote
