Summary

Muller Road Middle in Blythewood, SC, is a large K-8 school within the Richland 02 district, serving 1,242 students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

This school tells two very different stories depending on the grade level. In the elementary years (3rd-5th), the academic results are exceptional—proficiency rates in both English and Math are dramatically higher than district and state averages. For example, 4th-grade ELA proficiency sits at 95.2% compared to 64.6% for the district, and 5th-grade math proficiency is 83.3% versus 44.6% district-wide. These results even outpace nearby stand-alone elementary schools like Round Top Elementary and Bethel-Hanberry Elementary. However, there is a sharp "middle school cliff" starting in 6th grade, where proficiency rates in both subjects drop below state averages and remain there through 8th grade. This is the school's defining challenge. Notably, 8th graders who are accelerated into Algebra 1 perform exceptionally well, with a 98.55% proficiency rate on the end-of-course exam, far exceeding the state average of 73.95%.

There are also notable strengths and areas of concern among student groups. The school achieves outstanding results with its African American students, ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide, and also performs well with Hispanic students (80th percentile). However, students from low socio-economic backgrounds have seen a decline, now ranking in the 46th percentile. The school's overall state ranking has slipped from a consistent 4-star rating to a 3-star rating in recent years, likely reflecting the middle school struggles. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism is very low at 10.6%, well below the district (18.3%) and state (22.3%) averages, and the school achieves its strong elementary results with lower per-student spending ($11,972) than its nearby counterparts.

Open Quote The educational philosophy that this school is built upon is failing both students and teachers! This model leaves students totally unprepared for high school and there is no proof whatsoever that the idea of education this school chooses to implement is at all effective and in fact, the test scores prove it's falling very short in all state standards. Not only are students missing out on academic standards needed for thier future success in high school but the lack of control and supervision of students throughout the day leads to a very poor learning atmoshere. My child attended this school for one horrible year before I was able to get her into another school in our area. Thankfully the other school has a wonderful reputation in Blythewood and my child had much success there. I would never recommend Muller Rd. Close Quote
