E. L. Wright Middle in Columbia, SC, is a large K-8 school serving 1,275 students in the Richland 02 district, where it stands out for its extraordinary elementary program but faces significant challenges in its middle school grades.

The most striking finding is the dramatic "cliff" in academic performance between 5th and 6th grade. In 2025-2026, 3rd through 5th graders achieved an average of 94.6% proficiency in English Language Arts and 76.7% in math—scores that are 30-40 percentage points above state averages and far surpass nearby schools like Windsor Elementary (43.5% in 5th-grade ELA) and Forest Lake Elementary (59.4%). However, once students reach 6th grade, proficiency plummets to 41.9% in ELA and 26.7% in math—both below district and state averages. This pattern repeats across all subjects and multiple years, suggesting a fundamental challenge in the transition to middle school academics. The LAW program is decent and the school overall has other ways to help kids.Law, Avid, Duke TIP, Pace.And, Swag for academic help.Some people just complain since they're not mentally ready(as most kids are) when it comes to being around other people that may have issues — that are affecting to them.Like,most kids(including me).We face drama—We don't have it. This school sucks kids be having drugs and get in fights all the time and teachers are more focused on dress code when they need to be focused on the quality of the education. I have been at this school for 2 years and all the students and parents think the same thing. The teachers are unfair, The school is very unclean and dirty, and fights happen on the regular. They have ridiculous rules such as you can't have bookbags or ANY bag out at all. What's the point of bags if you can't use them. I would not recommend anyone coming to this school. If you think a good quality education and fair treatment is a must for your middle school child DONT choose this school. everyone hates this school very much Close Quote
