Summary

Seven Oaks Elementary is a PK-5 school in Columbia, SC, serving 522 students within the Lexington 05 district, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Seven Oaks currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the 18th percentile statewide, a significant drop from its 42nd percentile ranking a decade ago. The most pressing concern for parents is the achievement gap compared to nearby schools. For example, 3rd grade ELA proficiency sits at 52%, compared to a 72.6% district average, and 5th grade math proficiency is just 21.9% versus a 51.8% district average. Just 3.6 miles away, Harbison West Elementary achieves 68% proficiency in 3rd grade ELA. Chronic absenteeism is also a major issue, with a 25.4% rate—10 points higher than the district average and significantly above the 15.8% rate at Harbison West. This rate has risen 67% over three years. While the school maintains an excellent student-teacher ratio of 9.3:1, this advantage has not translated into higher scores, suggesting that factors like instructional quality and family engagement are driving the gap.

There are some encouraging signs. Recent data shows a dramatic 21-point improvement in 3rd grade ELA scores and an 11.5-point gain in 3rd grade math, suggesting new interventions may be working. However, a concerning pattern emerges in upper grades: math proficiency drops from 41.3% in 3rd grade to just 21.9% by 5th grade, indicating a cumulative learning gap. The school also spends more per student ($18,362) than higher-performing nearby schools like Meadow Glen Elementary ($14,334), which ranks in the 88th percentile. For parents, the key takeaway is that Seven Oaks faces significant challenges, but the recent early-grade improvements and small class sizes offer a foundation for potential turnaround if absenteeism and upper-grade instruction are addressed.

Open Quote I am a parent of 2 young children that go to this school. This is school has some GREAT teachers who care for the well being for the children they have in their classroom, but then you got some teachers there that don't. Some teachers have shown disrespect to some of their students by talking down to them and not lifting them up, you are suppose to encourage them not talk down to the students that are in your classroom. I find that very rude on the fact that they have chosen a career to be a GREAT role model to these kids and teach them. When my children first started going to this school I thought it was the best school for my kids to attend for their first years of school. A couple of accidents that has happened to my kids in this school has definitely made me change my mind, it makes me think on how they are really being treated in class when I am not there. There was nothing done to the other kids who have hurt them, they took it as they were young kids and that was it. If you don't have consequences for the kids and their actions when they are young what do they expect when they get older. They will have no grounds to stand on to be responsible students and Great out-comers. This school has really disappointed me on the outcome of how they really are. I just think that if you have certain rules you want the students to go by I think it is best that the teachers and the principals should go by them also, to be great role models for the kids that they are teaching. I just don't see that here at this school. So as all this being said we are currently trying to find another school for my kids to attend because my kids mean the world to me and as their mother I want the best for my kids and as of this school it just isn't it.
