Summary

Lancaster High serves approximately 1,390 students in grades 9-12 in Lancaster, SC, as part of the Lancaster 01 school district, where 87% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Lancaster High is a school of stark contrasts. On one hand, the school has achieved remarkable success with two specific groups of students: English Language Learners (ELL) and students with disabilities. In 2025-2026, the school ranked in the 83rd percentile statewide for ELL students and the 79th percentile for disabled students—a dramatic improvement from just two years prior, when those groups ranked in the 45th and 18th percentiles, respectively. This suggests that targeted programs for these students are working exceptionally well. However, the school struggles significantly with its highest-achieving students, ranking in the 6th percentile for gifted/talented students, and overall test scores lag well behind district and state averages. For example, only 44.68% of students scored proficient on the English 1 exam, compared to 67.73% across the district. The school also faces a serious chronic absenteeism crisis, with 41.9% of students chronically absent—nearly double the rate at nearby Indian Land High (20.4%) and more than triple the rate at Catawba Ridge High (12.4%).

Despite these challenges, there are encouraging signs of progress. The graduation rate has climbed from 63.0% in 2021-2022 to 80.6% in 2024-2025, a significant improvement, though it still trails the district (87.7%) and state (86.7%) averages. The school's overall state ranking has also improved from the 6th percentile to the 22nd percentile over the past few years. Interestingly, students who reach English 2 perform much better (77.59% proficient) than on English 1, suggesting effective remediation for students who persist. The school spends $12,645 per student, which is lower than several nearby schools like Buford High ($16,220) and Andrew Jackson High ($15,668), and has a higher student-teacher ratio (15.8) than most comparable schools. The biggest opportunity for improvement lies in addressing chronic absenteeism—when students are present and supported, as evidenced by the ELL and disabled student success, they can achieve at high levels.
