Summary

Flowertown Elementary is a public school in Summerville, SC, serving 783 students in grades PK-5 within the highly rated Dorchester 02 school district. While the district itself ranks in the top 30% of South Carolina, Flowertown’s own performance has declined significantly over the past decade, dropping from a 4-star rating in 2016-2017 to a 2-star rating in the 2025-2026 school year.

Compared to nearby elementary schools, Flowertown’s academic results are notably lower. In the most recent school year, the school ranked 411th out of 649 schools in the state (37th percentile), while neighbors like Beech Hill Elementary (91st percentile) and William M. Reeves Elementary (87th percentile) perform in the top 15% statewide. Test scores reflect this gap—for example, 4th-grade ELA proficiency at Flowertown was 59.2%, compared to the district average of 71.9% and Beech Hill’s 89.2%. Math scores show a similar pattern, with 5th-grade proficiency at 41% versus the district’s 51.8%. Even Newington Elementary, located just 0.12 miles away, ranks slightly higher at the 39th percentile, showing that even nearby schools face distinct challenges.

One positive note is that Flowertown spends more per student ($13,535) than higher-performing peers like Reeves ($12,247) and Beech Hill ($11,305), and it maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.9. However, chronic absenteeism remains a concern at 21.2%, higher than Beech Hill (15.7%) and Sand Hill (16.3%). The school has also seen a sharp decline in outcomes for certain student groups in recent years, which suggests that targeted support may be needed to reverse the downward trend. For parents considering this school, it’s worth exploring what specific programs and interventions are in place to address these challenges.

Open Quote This is my son's second year at Flowertown, and I couldn't be happier! His teachers have always been fantastic. I love how the school gives incentives to the children to do well in school, and makes sure that for part of the day the children learn on their own level so that they can be challenged without being overwhelmed.
