Mt. Pleasant Academy is a highly regarded elementary school in Mount Pleasant, SC, serving 630 students in grades PK-5 within the Charleston 01 school district. This school has earned a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past decade and currently ranks #8 out of 649 elementary schools in South Carolina, placing it in the 99th percentile statewide.

What truly sets Mt. Pleasant Academy apart is its remarkable consistency. Over the last ten years, its state ranking has never dipped below the top 2% of all elementary schools in South Carolina. Test scores are dramatically higher than district and state averages—for example, 4th-grade math proficiency sits at 93%, compared to 60.6% for the district and 52.3% for the state. The school also boasts an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of just 6.0%, compared to 20.5% for the district and 22.3% for the state. This suggests a highly engaged student body and strong family-school connection. The school also shows effectiveness across student subgroups, with a notable improvement in serving low socio-economic status students, jumping from the 75th to the 94th percentile in just one year.

Parents considering this school should know it sits in a highly competitive cluster of top-tier schools. Nearby Belle Hall Elementary (#3), Stiles Point Elementary (#4), and Sullivan's Island Elementary (#5) are all within a 5-mile radius and also rank in the top 5 in the state. One area to watch: math proficiency shows a consistent dip as students progress, dropping from 90% in 3rd grade to 82.4% in 5th grade. Additionally, per-student spending spiked to $28,129 in 2023-2024 before settling back to $17,083—a figure that is actually lower than some lower-performing schools in the district, highlighting that factors beyond funding drive this school's exceptional outcomes.

Open Quote MPA is an excellent neighborhood school. The children respect both their teachers and peers. Improvements could be made to the front entrance and lobby to make it have a more welcoming appeal. Close Quote
