Summary

Palmetto Elementary in Williamston, SC, serves approximately 572 students in grades PK-5 as part of the highly-rated Anderson 01 school district, which ranks 3rd out of 75 districts statewide.

Palmetto Elementary has seen its statewide ranking decline steadily over the past five years, dropping from the 72nd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 51st percentile in 2025-2026. However, the school shows a notable strength: it ranks in the 71st percentile statewide for serving students from low-income backgrounds, earning 4 stars for this subgroup. This is particularly significant given that 77.2% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. The school also maintains impressively low chronic absenteeism at 14.0%—well below both the district average of 17.5% and the state average of 22.3%—suggesting strong family engagement. One area of concern is a widening gender gap: female students now rank in the 36th percentile (2 stars) while male students rank in the 58th percentile (3 stars), a 131-position difference that has grown dramatically in recent years.

Compared to nearby schools in the same district, Palmetto is the lowest-performing among five elementary schools. Wren Elementary ranks in the 92nd percentile, Spearman Elementary in the 94th, Cedar Grove Elementary in the 82nd, and West Pelzer Elementary—just 1.14 miles away—in the 78th percentile. The school spends $12,488 per student, which is higher than several better-performing peers, yet math proficiency lags district averages by 19-23 percentage points. Science performance is a relative bright spot, coming close to state averages. While the school excels with its core demographic of economically disadvantaged students, the declining overall trend and underperformance relative to nearby schools suggest targeted interventions in math and support for specific student groups could help reverse the current trajectory.

Open Quote This is by far the WORST school I have ever had the "pleasure" of being involved with. It is the biggest mistake ever putting our kid here. She actually fell behind when we moved here and they did nothing to admit to it etc. The principals are rude and disrespectful. they also claim that over 90% of the fathers/parents are in jail. (UNTRUE) they do not promote or ask for parent volunteers like other school. All the teachers/staff out at the car line are rude and have frowns on their faces acting like the car line is a burden. IF YOU LOVE YOUR KIDS AVOID THIS SCHOOL! Close Quote
