Summary

Primrose Hill School is an exceptional elementary school located in Barrington, Rhode Island, serving grades PK-3 with a total enrollment of 361 students. This school consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with a statewide ranking between 9th and 52nd over the past 10 years.

Primrose Hill School's academic performance is truly impressive, with its 3rd-grade proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics consistently higher than the state averages, often exceeding 50% proficiency. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school's 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rate was 58.5%, compared to the Barrington district average of 58.8% and the Rhode Island state average of 36.7%. Similarly, the school's 3rd-grade Mathematics proficiency rate was 47.6%, compared to the Barrington district average of 57.3% and the Rhode Island state average of 38.4%. This consistent high performance is a testament to the school's effective teaching and learning practices.

While Primrose Hill School excels overall, the school's performance across different student subgroups reveals some potential achievement gaps. The school's male students and low socioeconomic status students rank in the top half of Rhode Island elementary schools, but its female students and white students rank in the bottom half. This suggests the need for the school to address these gaps and ensure that all students receive the support they need to succeed. Nonetheless, Primrose Hill School's relatively low student-teacher ratio and increasing per-student spending indicate a strong commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience for its students.

Open Quote Primrose Hill School has a student body and community that could potentially foster a truly excellent education. The quality of the test schools when you look at this school by the numbers should mostly be attributed to the largely affluent demographic who can afford to supplement the sub-par education offered by this school. The largely homogeneous nature of the school also denies the students a chance to have a culturally or economicly diverse experience. A lack of leadership, low teacher expectations and accountability, weak district oversight, and lack of consideration for the student as a whole child make this school a place we are very glad to leave. If you are considering buying in this school zone be prepared for an average education if your child is high performing, and to be constantly annoyed by the lack of professional clear communications from the school leadership. I give Primrose Hill school 2 stars instead of 1 only because of my positive experience with other families at this school and a couple of teachers/staff members. Close Quote

Open Quote Four of our children were educated thru Primrose Hill School and our experience was excellent. They have a nurturing environment from K-3 and really invest in the children's success. Teachers are wonderful with a mix of experienced and young educators. Lastly they have an annual fair sponsored by the PTO who is very active and the proceed go to enrichment after school programs, the school is very much a collection of interested parties. Additionally 2 of our children graduated from Ivy league schools so they are doing something right. Close Quote
