Summary

KIPP Philadelphia Charter School is an elementary school serving 864 students in grades K-8 in the North Philadelphia area. However, the school has consistently underperformed academically, with significantly lower proficiency rates in both math and English Language Arts (ELA) compared to the state average and the nearby Philadelphia City School District.

In the 2024-2025 school year, only 12.1% of KIPP Philadelphia students were proficient or better in math, compared to the state average of 41.7%, and just 18.5% were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state average of 48.5%. The school's performance is particularly weak in higher grade levels, with only 1.3% of 8th graders proficient or better in math and 25.7% in ELA. KIPP Philadelphia also struggles to support its subgroups, ranking low compared to other Pennsylvania elementary schools for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and students with disabilities.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Hartranft John F School, Peirce Thomas Middle School, and Duckrey Tanner School, also perform poorly compared to the state average, but generally outperform KIPP Philadelphia in both math and ELA proficiency. This suggests that the challenges faced by these schools may be related to the socioeconomic factors of the student population, rather than just the school's performance. Despite the high per-student spending at KIPP Philadelphia, the school continues to struggle academically, indicating that simply allocating more resources may not be the sole solution to improving student outcomes.

Open Quote My little cousins have been attending Kipp for about 2 years. Before they went there they had trouble staying focused and keeping there grades up. Over time in kipp they have been bringing nothing but A's in, and school are coming to them for admission. Close Quote
