Summary

Lewis Elementary School is a K–5 school serving 267 students in southeast Portland's Brentwood-Darlington/Woodstock area, part of Portland School District 1J. It ranks 78th of 709 Oregon elementary schools in 2025-26 (89th percentile, 4 stars), placing it in the state's top decile. The school's story is one of sustained improvement: in the mid-2010s it was a mostly 3-star school in the 63rd–84th percentile, but since 2021-22 it has stayed at or above the 88th percentile, peaking at 94th (rank 42) in 2022-23. The last two years have settled around 88th–89th — still strong, but worth watching.

Reading and math are clear strengths: 71.1% of students met standards in English language arts and 63.8% in math, each about 13 points above the district and 27–31 points above the state. Science is the loud exception at 37.8% — the only subject below the district average, and well behind nearby Woodstock (51.5%), Llewellyn (55.7%), Duniway (63.0%) and Creston (71.1%). It is largely a single-grade issue: 5th-grade math (40.0%) and science (37.8%) fall below district, while 3rd and 4th graders are comfortably above district in both reading and math. Attendance is a genuine bright spot — chronic absenteeism dropped from 32.1% to 20.1% in three years, below both district (32.5%) and state (33.5%), with only Duniway (12.1%) and Woodstock (14.4%) better nearby.

What sets Lewis apart is how well it serves its highest-need students. Special education students ranked in the 93rd–94th percentile three years running (5 stars), and low-income students in the 81st–84th percentile — at or above the school's own 89th-percentile overall standing, the opposite of the usual pattern. Notably, Lewis spends $23,214 per pupil (second-lowest among nearby schools) and has a 17.5 student-teacher ratio (third-highest), yet outperforms better-funded neighbors. Overall, Lewis is a strong choice with a real improvement record; the 5th-grade math and science dip is the clearest area to ask about.
