Azalea Middle School

Azalea Middle School is the sole public middle school in Brookings, a small town on Oregon's southern coast, serving 309 students in grades 6–8 as the only middle school campus in the Brookings-Harbor School District 17C.

Because no other school sits within 20 miles, the most useful comparisons are the district and the state. Azalea trails both in every tested subject: 29% of students met standards in English language arts versus 37.5% district-wide and 43.8% statewide, 17% in math versus 25.5% and 32.9%, and 13% in science versus 18% and 30.6%. That places the school 310th of 371 Oregon middle schools (16th percentile, 1 star) for 2025–26, and it has earned 1 star in eight of the past ten reported years. Math is the most consistent concern — every grade lands around 15–18%, roughly half the state rate — while ELA climbs by grade, from 21.8% in 6th to 35.4% in 8th, the school's strongest result. Science, tested only in 8th grade, is the deepest gap at more than 17 points below the state.

The clearest bright spot is attendance. Chronic absenteeism fell to 25.2% in 2024–25, down 19.6 points from 44.8% in 2021–22, and now sits 8.3 points better than the state average and slightly better than the district. Resources have also grown: per-student spending is $19,870 (up 17.2% in four years) and the student–teacher ratio has improved to 18:1. About 84% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The open question for families is whether the attendance gains translate into higher proficiency, or whether the math and science gaps prove more stubborn.
