Summary:

Hermiston School District 8 in eastern Oregon serves 5,320 students across nine schools — six elementary, two middle and one high school — and ranks 55th of 141 Oregon districts (61st percentile, 3 stars). A defining feature is that every school reports free/reduced lunch above 91%, so high poverty is a shared context rather than a difference between schools. Performance, however, varies widely: school percentiles span from 28th to 82nd. The two middle schools sit near the middle of the state: Sandstone Middle School (3 stars, 51st percentile) and Armand Larive Middle School (2 stars, 49th percentile).

Two elementaries stand far above the rest. Desert View Elementary School is the district's top performer: 4 stars, 130th of 709 elementaries (82nd percentile), and the highest proficiency in all three subjects (ELA 61.5%, Math 52.5%, Science 43.2%), with chronic absenteeism of 27.8%. Highland Hills Elementary School is also 4 stars (75th percentile) with ELA 57.0%, Math 46.5% and Science 36.2%, the lowest chronic absenteeism in the district (20.1%) and the highest per-student spending ($23,248). These two are the only schools exceeding state averages in all three subjects, and both have improved or held steady over three years. Sunset Elementary School is the most improved, rising from 1 star to 2 stars and from the 27th to the 41st percentile.

Concerns are concentrated elsewhere. Hermiston High School graduates 85.0% of students, above the state's 83.0%, but math is 16.5% versus the state's 22.9%, science is 25.8% versus 33.8%, and chronic absenteeism is the district's highest at 44.2%. Rocky Heights Elementary School is the lowest-ranked school (1 star, 28th percentile) with the lowest per-student spending ($19,111) and 39.2% absenteeism, while Loma Vista Elementary fell from 3 stars to 2 and posts the district's lowest science score (16.7%). Science is the district's weakest subject overall at 25.8%, against the state's 30.6%. Notably, the highest-spending schools — Highland Hills and Desert View — are also the top performers.
