Summary

Unioto Elementary is a PK–5 school on Sandusky Blvd in Chillicothe, OH, serving 1,032 students in the Union-Scioto Local district and ranking as the largest elementary in its nearby comparison group. For 2025–26, it placed 780th of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools—50th percentile, 3 stars—while the district ranked 390th of 773 Ohio districts at the 50th percentile. Unioto is best described as state-average overall but with real strengths: it met or exceeded state results in five of seven tested grade/subject combinations, and its fifth-grade math and science scores have been above the state every year for four years.

First, attendance has improved dramatically: chronic absenteeism fell from 31.8% in 2021–22 to 15.2% in 2025–26, below the district’s 19.6% and better than Chillicothe Intermediate School (31.2%), Chillicothe Primary School (36.2%), Huntington Elementary School (26.0%), Waverly Intermediate School (21.4%), and Southeastern Elementary School (17.8%). Second, low-income students performed at the 72nd percentile with 4 stars, and special education students improved from 1 star to 2 stars. Unioto also produces these results at $8,601 per student (2018–19) with an 18.1:1 student–teacher ratio and the largest enrollment locally, ranking third of 10 nearby schools, behind Logan Elm Elementary School and Southeastern Elementary School.

The main caution is a slow slide. Unioto’s statewide percentile has fallen from 62nd in 2021–22 and 2022–23 to 50th today. Fourth-grade math declined four straight years, from 78.4% to 65.2%, now 2.1 points below the state. Fifth-grade ELA dropped 10.3 points to 65.0%, which is 5.4 points below the state, though the same cohort had rebounded from a low fourth-grade ELA score. Fifth-grade math and science remain Unioto’s clearest edge and rank second among the seven local schools testing grade five. About 55.94% of students were economically disadvantaged in 2023–24, up from 45.2%. The key question is whether the upper-grade math/ELA softness is a passing cohort effect or a curriculum-level issue.
