Summary

Adena Middle School is a small rural school in Frankfort, Ohio serving 263 students in grades 6–8, and it is the middle-level school of the Adena Local district. In 2025-26 it ranked 659th of 1,046 Ohio schools (37th percentile, 2 stars), which is better than its own district's standing of 573rd of 773 districts (26th percentile, 1 star). The school slid from the 68th percentile in 2015-16 to a 28th-percentile low in 2024-25, then posted its largest single-year gain in a decade to reach 37th. At 263 students it is the second-smallest school in its 11-school comparison group.

Adena's clearest strength is attendance: 12.8% of students were chronically absent in 2025-26, the lowest of any comparison school — 8.3 points below Circleville Middle School and 21.5 points below Chillicothe Middle School. That rate has been cut by more than half since 2021-22. Staffing has improved sharply too, from 21.0 students per teacher in 2022-23 to 14.6 in 2024-25, the fourth-lowest in the group and far better than Westfall Middle School (23.9) or Unioto Middle School (24.3). The school does this at $7,361 per student, near the bottom of the group.

The main concern is 8th-grade math, where Adena scored 31.1% — 20.9 points below the state and lower than every nearby school, including Washington Middle School and Chillicothe. Cohort tracking suggests students erode in math as they move up rather than arrive weak, and incoming 6th graders are now the strongest signal in the data. Overall, seven of eight tested areas improved in 2025-26, with Algebra I at 100%, though small grade sizes make single-year swings noisy.
