Rootstown/Mabel Schnee Bldg Middle School is a 6th–8th grade middle school in Rootstown, a small community in Portage County, Ohio, serving 229 students as part of the Rootstown Local district. It currently ranks 453rd of 1,046 Ohio middle schools — 57th percentile, 3 stars — placing it mid-pack and roughly in line with its district (59th percentile, 3 stars). The longer story matters just as much: Rootstown/Mabel Schnee Bldg Middle School was a consistent 4-star, low-70s-percentile performer through 2018-19, and has since settled into a 3-star band in the mid-50s to mid-60s. That is a genuine step down in the distribution, not a one-year dip.

Two concerns stand out. Seventh grade math is the persistent weak spot — 43.3% proficient, below the state, and below the state in three of the last four years. Measured effectiveness has also diverged by group: female students rank in the 69th percentile statewide while male students rank 44th, a 25-point gap that opened over two years. Meanwhile, free/reduced lunch climbed from 32.4% to 40.2% as the low-income subgroup's percentile slipped from 58th to 39th. Rising economic need alongside slipping results for that group is the thread most worth watching.
