Berne Union High School in Sugar Grove, OH, is a small public school serving 366 students in grades 7–12 as part of Berne Union Local, where 92.62% of students received free/reduced lunch in 2024–25. It ranked in the 53rd percentile (3 stars) in 2025–26, up from 42nd percentile (2 stars) the prior year, though below the district’s 63rd-percentile rank.

Attendance and graduation are standout strengths. In 2025–26, the school had a 98.6% graduation rate and 16.3% chronic absenteeism, near the top of nearby schools; only Liberty Union High School and Fairfield Union High School had higher graduation rates, and only Bloom-Carroll High School had lower chronic absenteeism. The school has improved over time: chronic absenteeism fell from 30.8% in 2021–22 to 16.3%, and graduation rose from 91.7% in 2023–24 to 98.6%. Despite very high poverty—92.62% free/reduced lunch in 2024–25—the school outperformed Amanda-Clearcreek High School on overall rank, graduation, absenteeism, and several tests, though it trails lower-poverty Bloom-Carroll High School in many test areas while staying competitive with Liberty Union High School overall. Its 14.6 student-teacher ratio is lower than most nearby high schools.

On tests, the school was above the state in every end-of-course subject and in 7th/8th grade math and ELA in 2025–26. Its strongest relative results were 7th grade ELA (76.6% vs. 62.7% state), 7th grade math (60.9% vs. 48.6%), and English II (73.8% vs. 62.7%). End-of-course scores were strongest in American History (80.6%), American Government (78.8%), and English II, though nearby top performers such as Bloom-Carroll High School, Sheridan High School, Fairfield Union High School, and Logan Elm Middle/High School often scored higher in those subjects. Geometry was relatively strong at 44.8%, with only Sheridan High School and Amanda-Clearcreek High School higher nearby. The main red flag is 8th grade science: 58.3% vs. 61.2% state in 2025–26, below state in three of the last four years. The school’s small size (366 students) can make rankings volatile, and comparisons are imperfect because it serves grades 7–12 while several nearby high schools serve grades 9–12 only.
