Shale Meadows Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Lewis Center, Ohio, a suburb north of Columbus, serving 724 students in the Olentangy Local district, and it ranks 101st of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools — the 94th percentile — with a 5-star rating in 2025–26.

Reading is where Shale Meadows stands out most. Fifth-grade reading proficiency was 94.4%, the highest figure posted by any of the eleven nearby elementaries in any reading grade this year, and third-grade reading (91.0%) ranked first among those same schools. The school beats its own district in five of seven tested subject-and-grade combinations and tops the state in all seven. Nearby Peachblow Crossing Elementary is nearly a statistical twin — 648 students, also 5 stars — but its edge is in third- and fourth-grade math, while Shale Meadows' advantage is in reading at the top grade. Heritage Elementary School has a very similar academic profile, yet its chronic absenteeism (8.4%) is the highest in the group and nearly double Shale Meadows' 4.5%. Other Olentangy schools within a few miles — Freedom Trail Elementary, Oak Creek Elementary School, Glen Oak Elementary School and Arrowhead Elementary School — rank well below it.

Attendance is a genuine strength: 4.5% of students were chronically absent in 2025–26 against 9.2% district-wide, the second-lowest rate among local peers and the fifth straight year of improvement. Class sizes are large — 22.1 students per teacher, second highest in the comparison group — yet results match schools with much smaller classes. Two things are worth watching. Fourth grade is the only grade where the school trails its district, in both math (88.1% vs. 88.4%) and reading (83.2% vs. 85.7%), and it ranks in the bottom half locally. And the school's effectiveness with low-income students slipped from the 95th percentile three years ago to the 55th percentile now, as that group grew from roughly 3.4% to 9.4% of enrollment. No per-pupil spending figure is reported for Shale Meadows.
