Summary

Hopewell Junior School is a grades 7–8 middle school at 8200 Cox Road in West Chester, Ohio, serving 540 students as the smallest of the four junior highs in the Lakota Local district — roughly a third the size of Mason Middle School three miles away.

Statewide, Hopewell ranks 188 of 1,046 schools — the 82nd percentile, 4 stars — above its own district's 78th percentile. That is a full recovery to its pre-pandemic 2018–19 level, though still below its mid-2010s peak of 95th percentile. Its standout is advanced math: 95.8% of Algebra I and 100% of Geometry test-takers scored proficient, far above district and state figures, though those end-of-course exams are taken by a small accelerated group and don't reflect the whole school. On grade-level tests, Hopewell beats Ohio by 12 to 20 points in every subject but trails its own district in four of five. English language arts is the weak spot: 7th grade slipped from 80.0% to 74.6% in two years, and both grades now fall below district averages.

Two trends shape the picture. Poverty is rising fast — free/reduced lunch climbed from 25.3% to 38.15% in two years — while per-pupil spending ($8,048) sits in the lowest tier and the 24.4 student-teacher ratio is the second highest in the comparison set. Chronic absenteeism improved from 24.6% to 15.8%, though it ticked back up to 16.9% last year. Low-income students' results held or improved, but special education results fell sharply. Compared with neighbors, Hopewell outperforms higher-poverty Lakota Ridge Junior School (also 82nd percentile) but trails Liberty Junior School (90th percentile) and Mason Middle School (5 stars), which serve lower-poverty populations, have smaller classes, and spend roughly $1,700–$3,000 more per student.
