The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Ohio elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period.

Paul C Bunn Elementary faces significant challenges, with extremely high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 50.3% to 59.3% over the past few years, well above state and district averages. The school's academic performance is also very low, with students scoring far below state averages on Ohio state assessments across all grade levels and subjects. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups.

In contrast, nearby schools like West Boulevard Elementary and McKinley Elementary in the Boardman Local district rank in the top 20% of Ohio elementary schools and have significantly higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates than Paul C Bunn. Even the nearby Horizon Science Academy Youngstown, a charter school, generally outperforms Paul C Bunn on key metrics. Addressing the systemic challenges at Paul C Bunn Elementary will likely require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach.

Open Quote Test scores are not high in this school because of the socioeconomic background of the students. Schooldigger needs to look at more than just test scores when ranking schools. In 2009, PC Bunn was the recipient of an EEET grant that allowed the school to purchase state-of-the-art Promethean interactive whiteboards. To the credit of the Principal and staff, all the teachers participated in training and actually used the whiteboards in their classrooms. This is not always the case in schools. But at PC Bunn, the staff embraced the technology and is using it to enhance the students' learning. The atmosphere at the school is warm and inviting and there are too many extra programs than I have time or space to describe here. I wouldn't hesitate to enroll my children in this school.
