Summary

Gallia Academy Middle School serves about 414 students in grades 6–8 and is the only middle school in the Gallipolis City district in Gallipolis, Ohio, a small city in southeastern Ohio. Its defining trait is stability: over ten reported school years it has never earned more or less than 2 stars, with a statewide percentile that has stayed between 32 and 44 — roughly the 40th percentile of Ohio middle schools. About 58.5% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2023–24.

Among the three middle schools in the Gallipolis area, Gallia Academy is the largest and, in several practical ways, the most efficient. It has the smallest classes (15.9 students per teacher versus 18.4 at River Valley Middle School and 23.3 at South Gallia Middle School), the lowest chronic absenteeism (21.9%, down sharply from 40.0% the prior year), and the lowest per-pupil spending ($7,399 as of 2018–19). Even so, River Valley Middle School ranks higher overall — 52nd percentile and 3 stars versus Gallia Academy's 42nd percentile and 2 stars — while South Gallia Middle School trails at the 27th percentile with 1 star. Gallia Academy's strengths are concentrated in its advanced track and early grades: Algebra I proficiency has been 100% for two straight years against 61.6% statewide, gifted and talented students reached the 83rd percentile (4 stars), eighth-grade math rose from 32.6% to 58.0% (above the state's 52.0%), and sixth-grade math and English both beat state averages. Low-income students also score above the school's overall average.

The clearest weakness is seventh grade. Seventh-grade math proficiency fell to 16.7% in 2025–26, far below the state's 48.6% and River Valley's 64.8%, and it has trailed the state in every reported year; seventh-grade English lags as well. Eighth-grade science is a quieter concern, declining for four straight years to 47.6%, which is 13.6 points below the state. Because the school's 6th- and 8th-grade math results are above state averages, the problem looks specific to a grade level rather than school-wide. Closing that seventh-grade math gap is the change most likely to move Gallia Academy from 2 stars to 3.
