Westwood Middle School serves grades 5–8 in Elyria City Schools in Lorain County, Ohio, enrolling 480 students — the smallest of the district's three middle schools. It is a high-poverty neighborhood school: 76.7% of students were economically disadvantaged in 2023–24, roughly double nearby Amherst's rate (34.9%) and more than four times Avon's (16.4%). English language arts trails the district and state at every grade, and grade 8 science has declined four years straight to 36.8%. Chronic absenteeism is the most urgent trend: 37.0% in 2025–26, meaning more than one in three students misses enough school to be flagged, up from 31.0% five years earlier.

Against its district peers, Westwood sits in the middle. It trails Northwood Middle School, which serves a similar community and more students yet ranks 10 percentile points higher with 27.5% chronic absenteeism, and is roughly level with Eastern Heights Middle School, though stronger in 8th-grade math and Algebra I. The gap to wealthier neighbors is enormous — Avon Middle School and Amherst Junior High School outperform Westwood by 30–45 percentage points in most subjects. Westwood's small classes and low spending coexist with low achievement, with results tracking poverty and funding more closely than class size. The takeaway: there is a genuine accelerated track and a favorable student-teacher ratio, but the general education core — especially middle-grades math and attendance — needs attention.
