Summary

Innovation Academy West is a K–8 charter school serving 131 students at 13111 Crossburn Ave in Cleveland's West Park neighborhood, operating as its own single-school district. Its defining story is momentum: over the past decade the school has climbed from the 7th percentile of Ohio schools to the 40th, with four consecutive years of improvement (20 → 25 → 32 → 40 percentile) and its first two-star ratings.

Classes here are the smallest in the area by a wide margin — 10.4 students per teacher, down from 13.4 three years ago, compared with 19.4 at Artemus Ward and 23.3 at Garfield Elementary School. Chronic absenteeism has fallen even faster, from 61.2% in 2021–22 to 24.5%, roughly 30 points below the Cleveland Municipal average and about 38 points better than West Park Bilingual Academy, the school 0.16 miles away, which reports 62.6% absenteeism and ranks in the 11th percentile. Test scores have followed: the school's average gap to the state shrank from 28 points behind in 2022–23 to about 7 points behind in 2025–26, and five of eleven reported grade-level results now meet or beat the state. Reading is the strongest area, with grades 3–5 above the state average in English language arts. The clearest weak spot is 5th-grade science, at 26.7% versus 62.7% statewide, along with 3rd- and 5th-grade math and 6th- and 7th-grade ELA.

Perhaps most notable, the school's economically disadvantaged students rank at the 53rd percentile — higher than the school's own overall 40th percentile. Two cautions: with roughly 10–16 students per tested grade, a single student can move a grade-level result by double digits, and no 8th-grade results are reported at all. Even so, Innovation Academy West is the strongest-performing charter in its immediate area and the clearest improving school nearby.
