Summary

Middlebury Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Akron, Ohio, with 212 students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Ohio elementary schools over the past several years, earning a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Middlebury Academy's district rank is 708 out of 828 in Ohio, indicating it is one of the lower-performing districts in the state.

Middlebury Academy faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students. The school has struggled with extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 50.8% to 80.3% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average and the surrounding schools. Additionally, Middlebury Academy's student proficiency rates on Ohio state tests are consistently well below state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 26.1% of 5th graders were proficient in math compared to the state average of 56.7%, and only 15% of 8th graders were proficient in English Language Arts compared to 54.4% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low for female students, male students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Ohio elementary schools.

Interestingly, the nearby public and charter schools in Akron, such as Glover Community Learning Center, Main Preparatory Academy, and Akron Preparatory School, generally outperform Middlebury Academy on key metrics like test scores, chronic absenteeism, and student-teacher ratios. Additionally, Middlebury Academy's spending per student, at $7,599, is lower than the surrounding Akron City district schools, which spend around $10,000-$11,500 per student. These factors may contribute to the school's persistent low performance and lack of improvement over time.

Open Quote If I could leave a one star I would, a teacher who has quit told us his experience of his former job, now he currently works at my school, and the story of his HORRIBLE experience was expressed in the most horrific ways possible. I am a 8th grade from another school, and if you think any other school in Ohio is bad, the stories constantly prove why they're ranked so badly. He says that staff is wonderful, but the students can get away with anything as he had explained he was nearly pushed from a second story window, car nearly stolen, and even destroying his car keys, we cant forget these kids are thuggish and steal from their facility, I am not from the best of schools, but I am just a worried citizen for what can become of your children and what will happened to their pure heart's, please stay away. Open Quote I met with the principal summer of 2018 and she explained much of what she strives against to give her students the best education she can. i was very impressed. Her obstacles are many, and she is very proud of her staff and the work they do. I'm sold. It may not be for everybody, but I believe they serve a great public need to the best of their ability. Open Quote Middlebury is the most unprofessional school i seen so far, and its not the school per say its the teacher/after school teacher, she is very rude and unprofessional, she treated my son so poorly when I picked him up he had tears in his eyes, she was rude and disrespectful to me over the phone and when I go to the school to talk to the principal about it her whole story change, so after the meeting with the principal I let it go and weeks goes by then another situation comes about and my son said she was yelling at him and was being mean and she said to him i don't care who you tell im not scared of your mother. How unprofessional is that? To me as a teacher you handle situation in a dtfferent manner and you should never tell a 7 year old im not scared of your mother you can tell who ever you want, that pissed me off and something must be done, that teacher said it in front of my face and had a look on her face like she meant what she said, my son will not be back there the teachers all stick together including the principal and the board of education will be notified!!!
