Western Reserve Local is a small Ohio district in Berlin Center that serves roughly 542 students across three schools on one K–12 campus: Western Reserve Elementary School (K–5, 270 students), Western Reserve Middle School (6–8, 145), and Western Reserve High School (9–12, 127). The three buildings are far from identical. Western Reserve Middle School is the district's standout and one of Ohio's strongest middle schools: 5 stars in each of the last three years, a 2025–2026 rank of 76th of 1,046 middle schools (top 7%), Algebra I End-of-Course proficiency of 100% in both 2024–25 and 2025–26, and 8th-grade math at 92.3% versus 52% statewide. Western Reserve High School is the biggest improver, rising from 345/855 (60th percentile, 3 stars) to 218/795 (73rd percentile, 4 stars) with a 100% graduation rate, even though 97.64% of its students are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Western Reserve Elementary School is still a 4-star, above-state school but is trending down: its percentile fell from 82 to 71, and average proficiency across its seven tested areas dropped from about 81.4% to 76.4% while the state comparison stayed essentially flat.
Two watch items stand out for parents. Chronic absenteeism climbs steeply with grade level — 10.9% in elementary, 13.1% in middle, and 22.6% in high school, more than double the elementary rate and well above the district's 14.1%.
