Summary:
Avon Lake City has two middle-grade schools serving about 1,096 students in a district ranked #53 of 773 Ohio districts (93rd percentile, 5 stars): Learwood Middle School (grades 7–8, 557 students) and Troy Intermediate Elementary School (listed as grades 5–8, 539 students). The two buildings are nearly identical in size and split the middle grades rather than compete for them — Learwood's tests cover 7th–8th grade, Troy's cover 5th–6th. That means their results never overlap, so the fair question for each is how it performs against its own grade-level benchmarks, not against the other school.
On that measure, both do very well. Every one of the 22 reported Ohio State Test results beat the state average in both years — the smallest margin was +10.4 points and the largest +40.6 points. Learwood Middle School posted the file's standout number: Algebra I End-of-Course proficiency of 100% in 2024–25 and 99.1% in 2025–26, against roughly 60% statewide. It also recorded the biggest year-over-year gain, with 8th grade math rising from 58.0% to 74.5%. Troy Intermediate Elementary School earned 93.2% proficient in 5th grade science and 90.6% in 5th grade math in 2025–26, and its 2016–17 rank of #11 out of 1,038 Ohio schools (99th percentile) is the strongest rank in the data.
Two items to watch. Learwood Middle School reports 19.0% chronic absenteeism — above the 15.4% district average for Avon Lake City and above Troy's 13.3% — and 8th grade math remains its softest subject even after the rebound. Troy Intermediate Elementary School's only notable decline was a 7.8-point drop in 6th grade ELA, to 78.6%. Note also that Troy's most recent rank is from 2016–17, absenteeism covers one year, and spending figures date to 2018–19, so some of these pictures are incomplete.
