Summary:

West Geauga Middle School is the only middle school in West Geauga Local, serving grades 6–8 with 493 students (about 164 per grade) at 8611 Cedar Rd in Chesterland. Because it is the district's entire middle-level offering, everything below describes one building that also largely defines the district's reputation.

This school is among the strongest in Ohio. It has earned 5 stars and a top-1% state ranking for three straight years, placing 14th of 1,046 schools in 2025–26, 19th of 1,036 in 2024–25, and 15th of 1,046 in 2023–24. In 2025–26 it outperformed the state in every tested subject and grade by 28 to 57 points — including Math 8 at 95.0% versus 52.0% statewide, Science 8 at 90.8% versus 61.2%, and ELA 7 at 90.3% versus 62.7%. Its average proficiency was roughly 91.8% against about 55.5% statewide. Math is the clearest strength, and the margin over the state actually widens in the upper grades. Geometry and Algebra I end-of-course exams hit 100% proficiency in both years, versus state rates in the 40s and 60s, though those exams are typically taken by a small, selected group of advanced students. Last year's results were nearly identical, so this is not a one-year spike.

Context matters too. Chronic absenteeism is 10.4%, slightly better than the district's 11.0%, meaning about 1 in 10 students is chronically absent. Free or reduced lunch is 18.66%, low relative to many Ohio middle schools, while the student-teacher ratio is a high 21.3:1 — so these results come without a small-class advantage. Keep two caveats in mind: per-student spending of $13,242 is from 2018–19 and does not describe today's funding, and with only one school in the area there are no in-district peers to compare against — only district and state benchmarks.
