Summary

Riverhead Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in the Riverhead Central School District, with a student population of 789. Despite spending significantly more per student than the state average, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New York middle schools over the past several years, with a current statewide ranking of 1363 out of 1500 schools and a 0 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverhead Middle School significantly underperforms the state and district averages on standardized tests, with only 21.2% of 7th graders proficient in ELA compared to the state average of 50.99%, and just 11.28% of 8th graders proficient in math compared to 46.74% statewide. The school also struggles to serve its diverse student population, with African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Economically Disadvantaged students all ranking in the bottom half or bottom quarter of their respective statewide subgroups. In contrast, the school's Migrant students rank in the top half.

Neighboring middle schools in the Riverhead Central School District and surrounding districts, such as William Floyd Union Free School District and Rocky Point Union Free School District, generally outperform Riverhead Middle School on key metrics like test scores and subgroup performance. This suggests that the challenges faced by Riverhead Middle School may be unique to the school itself, rather than the broader geographic area.

Open Quote I'm a former student of here and had a terrible experience. I had issues with bullies. The general response I got when I tried to report it was gaslighting and victim-blaming.

I also got punished for defending myself while the bullies got off scot-free if I ever retaliated, verbally or physically.

From what I've heard from coworkers I have now whose kids attend, they haven't changed one single bit. Close Quote
