The school is part of the Riverhead Central School District, which is ranked 814 out of 874 school districts in New York and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riley Avenue School consistently underperforms compared to the state average in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates for grades 3 and 4. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 38.64% compared to the state average of 54.15%, and its 4th grade Math proficiency rate was 39.44% compared to the state average of 58.64%. The school's performance is also below the Riverhead Central School District average in both ELA and Math for grades 3 and 4. While the school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with White students performing relatively well, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, as well as Special Education students, perform poorly compared to their peers statewide.

Despite the school's high per-student spending of $32,965 in 2023-2024, which is significantly higher than the state average, and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Riley Avenue School has consistently ranked in the bottom 30% of New York elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. This suggests that the challenges faced by the school may not be solely related to resource allocation or staffing, but rather to other factors, such as curriculum, instructional practices, or school leadership. Nearby schools within the Riverhead Central School District also perform poorly, while some nearby schools in other districts, such as Ridge Elementary School and Eastport Elementary School, demonstrate stronger academic performance, suggesting that the challenges faced by Riley Avenue School may be specific to the district.
