Summary

Longwood High School is a public high school located in Middle Island, New York, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,993 students. It is part of the Longwood Central School District, which is ranked 690 out of 874 school districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Longwood High School has consistently ranked in the top 50% of New York high schools over the past several years, with a current ranking of 473 out of 1,234 high schools in the state. It has maintained a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating above-average performance compared to other schools in the state. The school performs particularly well in certain student subgroups, ranking in the top 20% of New York high schools for African American and Hispanic students, and in the top 25% for English Language Learners and Special Education students. However, Longwood High School has a chronic absenteeism rate of around 35%, which is significantly higher than the state average and a potential area of concern.

Compared to nearby schools, Longwood High School generally performs better than William Floyd High School, which is also part of a low-performing school district. However, it lags behind higher-performing schools like Eastport-South Manor Junior Senior High School and Shoreham-Wading River High School in terms of academic achievement and school rankings. Longwood High School spends significantly more per student ($32,171 in 2023-2024) compared to the state average, but this does not seem to translate into consistently higher academic outcomes, suggesting that factors beyond just funding, such as instructional quality, school climate, and student engagement, may be important in driving student success.

Open Quote I am a student graduating with the 2013 class. Within the past 4 years, I can say it was a good school overall. The history teachers knew what they were teaching, very reachable. The math teachers weren't the best in my opinion. Some don't have the skills to teach and some are not approachable. From 9th to 12th I would say half of the math teachers i recieved were able to perform to their duties. The english teachers were good. They are very outgoing and they take pride of their work and students. The science teachers were overall good teachers. They are very knowlegable and cool. They are also approachable and willing to put in the effort. Basically all the teachers were good except for the math teachers. The math department is going have to step their game up or quit. Open Quote I am a past studet....graduated in 1977.....Therefore my rating is based upon that time frame. At that time I believe Longwood was a highly effective school, granting me a quality education. I was in honor classes and received regents scholarships in both my undergraduate and graduate studies. The only problem I had was at that time, not too many african americans attended the school and I definately didn't have many in my classes which is why I yearned for a Historically black college during my undergraduate years. I hope the school continue to produce high level academics and students. I welcome a more recent graduate to review. Close Quote
