Fe Smith Intermediate School is a public elementary school located in Cortland, New York, serving grades 3-4 with a total enrollment of 272 students. The school is part of the Cortland City School District, which is ranked 710 out of 874 school districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.6 and a high per-student spending of $25,823, Fe Smith Intermediate School consistently underperforms compared to the state average on the New York State Assessments for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 19.38% of 3rd-grade students and 33.59% of 4th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state averages of 54.15% and 54.07%, respectively. Similarly, in Math, only 31.25% of 3rd-grade students and 45.8% of 4th-grade students were proficient or better, compared to the state averages of 59.7% and 58.64%. The school's statewide ranking has also steadily declined over the past several years, from ranking 1,344 out of 2,201 New York elementary schools in the 2020-2021 school year to ranking 2,217 out of 2,445 in the 2024-2025 school year.

When compared to nearby schools, Fe Smith Intermediate School generally underperforms. For example, Millard Fillmore Elementary School, which is located 13.25 miles away, outperforms Fe Smith Intermediate School in both ELA and Math proficiency rates for 3rd and 4th grades. The high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients at Fe Smith Intermediate School (61.4% in 2023-2024) suggests that the school serves a population with significant socioeconomic challenges, which may contribute to the academic struggles. However, the school's resources and low student-teacher ratio indicate that there may be opportunities for improvement if the school can implement effective instructional strategies and support systems to better address the needs of its students.

Open Quote Teachers never seemed to help. I was trying to explain the amount of bullying I received. I was told I was TOO OLD TO CRY!! Students are never confronted, nor sent home if sick. I found a BUG in my food.... GROSS!!! I graduated and I'm happy that I finally am going to CHSHS. Close Quote
