Summary

KIPP Troy Preparatory Charter School is a public charter school serving 742 students in grades K-12 in Troy, New York, an area with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged families. While the school's graduation rates, ranging from 78.7% to 85.1%, are generally lower than the state average, they are still higher than some nearby traditional public schools like Hoosic Valley Junior Senior High School and Tamarac Middle School High School, which had 84.3% graduation rates.

KIPP Troy Preparatory has seen a decline in dropout rates, from 10% in 2021-2022 to 4.5% in 2023-2024, a positive trend. However, the school continues to struggle with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 31.5% to 62.2% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average and nearby schools. The school's test scores on New York State Assessments and Regents exams are also generally lower than the state averages, particularly in math and science.

Despite these challenges, KIPP Troy Preparatory's status as a charter school provides it with more flexibility and autonomy to implement innovative strategies to improve student outcomes. The school's higher spending per student, from $12,801 in 2020-2021 to $20,927 in 2023-2024, may be an attempt to address these issues, and the school's track record of declining dropout rates and some areas of stronger performance compared to nearby Hoosic Valley Central School District and Brunswick Central School District (Brittonkill) suggest there is potential for improvement with the right interventions, particularly in addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote I’d rate this school in the negative if I could. They should be investigated for child neglect and endangerment. Leadership is bullying and abusive I’ve to the students. If you notice on their employment page they are always posting for core program positions-math, history, English, and science. They can’t keep teachers in place. If you also notice there are very few men and racial minorities that work at Troy prep. There have been witness reports of numerous situations with students where leadership is abusive emotionally and physically. It’s a pathetic excuse for an educational institution and should be shut down immediately. It prays off of impoverished children in Troy and tries to sell it to them as a school that will break down racial barriers for the student. The leadership does not resemble any similar background of the students. Shut it down. Shut it down. Close Quote
