Summary

PS 238 Anne Sullivan is an elementary school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades PK-8 with 549 students. It is part of the New York City Geographic District #21, which is ranked 472 out of 874 districts in New York and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 238 Anne Sullivan consistently performs below the district and state averages on New York State Assessments for English Language Arts and Math across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 33.33% to 60.71% in ELA and 18.75% to 66.13% in Math, compared to the district's 57.01% to 66.08% in ELA and 60.83% to 74.37% in Math. The school also struggles to support certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of New York elementary schools for Female, Asian, Hispanic, and Low Socioeconomic Status students in ELA. However, the school performed better for Male and English Language Learner students, ranking in the top 50% for these subgroups.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $33,898 in the 2023-2024 school year, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages, PS 238 Anne Sullivan's student-teacher ratio of 10.1 is lower than the district average. When compared to other nearby schools in the same district, such as PS 215 Morris H Weiss and PS 95 Gravesend (The), PS 238 Anne Sullivan generally underperforms on state assessments and has a lower statewide ranking. These findings suggest a need for the school to implement targeted interventions to improve student outcomes and ensure equitable access to quality education for all students.

Open Quote The school staff treat parents with arrogance. Most parents are not native to the country and PS 238 takes advantage of the social and language barriers of parents. They are rude, demanding and condescending. It starts with security, secretaries and ends with the assistant principal. I never encountered the principal but by the temperament of the building it’s safe to say she is no different. I have encountered 4 teachers who are extremely kind but seemed overworked and not supported by administration. Children attending the school are well behaved but lack high scoring grades do to English being their second language. Close Quote
