Summary

PS 199 Frederick Wachtel is an elementary school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 538. It is part of the New York City Geographic District #21, which is ranked 472 out of 874 districts in New York and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, PS 199 Frederick Wachtel has consistently ranked in the middle range of New York elementary schools, with proficiency rates on state assessments generally below the district and state averages, particularly in math. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's math proficiency rates ranged from 44.59% to 60.32% for grades 3-5, compared to the district averages of 60.83% to 67.31%. The school's performance on English Language Arts (ELA) assessments is closer to the district and state averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 54.1% to 58.46% for grades 3-5 in the same year. The school's diverse student population, with significant percentages of Asian, Hispanic, and White students, as well as English Language Learners and students with special needs, shows varying performance across these subgroups.

Despite the school's higher per-student spending of $37,666 in the 2023-2024 school year and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11.3, its academic performance remains a challenge, particularly in math. Nearby schools in the same district, such as PS 238 Anne Sullivan and PS 226 Alfred De B Mason, have similar demographic and socioeconomic profiles but lower academic performance. In contrast, PS 121 Nelson A Rockefeller, a magnet school in a neighboring district, has significantly higher academic performance, suggesting that factors beyond just funding and resources may play a significant role in the school's performance.

Open Quote This school is excellent at knowing how to blow out money and ask for more.
All they care for is donations. Other than that, they follow the very strict Common Core curriculum and philosophy of "have the parents do the hard work and we'll take the credit" and "we'll stop at nobody and don't really care if your child learns or not".

Teachers are rude, they use overrated material that is badly written, they are unprepared and don't even know how to handle a violent student.

And, since we have no other choice, given that 75% of students fall below poverty limits, the principal simply does not care.

Logistics are bad, teachers are bad, policy is closed door, there's really nothing good I can say, my experience so far has been horrendus.

The community of parents is great, and so are the kids, but this chool is dehumanizing them and damaging them. Please apply to a different one or keep them at home. Close Quote

Open Quote Oh my, what memories. I attended this wonderful school from 1998-2005, starting in Kindergarten, ending in the 6th grade. The whole atmosphere of this school was so friendly and cozy now that I look back at it, especially compared to the changes it seems they have made now. The teachers I had were awesome. The nice, warm auditorium where we'd have assembly every Friday, strictly white shirt on that day! During lunch, Mrs. Velic and her general store, those delicious ice cream sandwiches. The janitors were really cool too, hey Frank! I remember ESL with Mrs. Klausner, "Take a special pretzel." :) Mrs. SeMarie's library. Those bookmarks we'd get with every book we'd check out. Those beanbags we'd get to sit on while watching a movie afterwards. There's just so much more! I had a really wonderful experience at P.S. 199! A really precious elementary school. I miss it a lot. If only time travel existed, so I can go back to relive my childhood memories, P.S. 199 being a part of it. Peace and Blessings. Close Quote
