Summary

PS 111 Jacob Blackwell is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Long Island City, New York, with a student population of 493. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #30, which is ranked 382 out of 874 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $22,614 to $32,710 over the past few years, PS 111 Jacob Blackwell consistently performs significantly below the district and state averages on New York State Assessments for English Language Arts and Math. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in ELA ranged from 19.23% to 40.48% across different grade levels, compared to 58.59% to 63.27% for the district and 50.86% to 56.61% for the state. Similarly, in Math, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 0% to 31.25%, while the district and state had rates of 47.13% to 66.54% and 46.74% to 59.7%, respectively. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of New York elementary schools for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as PS 166 Henry Gradstein, PS 234, and PS 158 Bayard Taylor, significantly outperform PS 111 Jacob Blackwell on academic measures, with much higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math. This suggests that there may be opportunities for PS 111 Jacob Blackwell to improve student outcomes through more effective resource allocation and instructional practices, despite the challenges it faces.

Open Quote I went to this school the year it was opened in 1949 with my twin brother. I am now 72. I cannot believe the test scores! How can this school be allowed to be open? I have submitted a review this last school year. I do not see it, or the other very nice reviews from other parents. Obviously they are unaware of what is going on academically. Close Quote
